Chanticleer Bike/Ped Overcrossing
The bicycle/pedestrian overcrossing at Chanticleer Avenue, part of the Highway 1 Auxiliary Lanes Project, is designed to provide an alternative route for bicyclists and pedestrians to cross over Highway 1, to improve bicycle and pedestrian connectivity to regional destinations and transit by providing a dedicated crossing for active transportation users at Chanticleer Avenue. Don't be confused! Engineers always orient their plans with South at the top.
The Bike/Ped Overcrossing project is currently under construction. However, according to County Pubic Works, initial planning for necessary improvements to Chanticleer Avenue was to be in coordination with the Kaiser Permanente project to contribute funds for preliminary design and to pursue grants. With the Kaiser project cancelled, there is no seed money for Chanticleer Avenue improvements. Considering all of the recent storm damage, there is no realistic expectation of a budget for improvements in the foreseeable future.
When the overcrossing is completed, without these improvements, pedestrians and bicyclists will be dumped north of the highway onto Chanticleer Avenue, as shown below. Notice the lack of sidewalks, bike lanes and drainage, making Chanticleer Avenue a dangerous obstacle course for pedestrians and cyclists.
