Hey parents! Did you buy your kid an e-bike? Did you give them any direction regarding safety, traffic laws, common courtesy? I can't tell you how many times I've seen kids running stop signs, riding on sidewalks, ignoring traffic laws, and generally being clueless. Today I came out of a shop in Capitola Village and was almost run down by a kid on the sidewalk. Then I saw two girls on one bike running a stop sign. And then I saw two girls turning from the right lane, across the left lane, and causing oncoming traffic to stop for them. They thought it was really funny. This has gotten out of control, and somebody is going to get hurt, or worse.

Three years after the ubiquitous red JUMP bikes left Santa Cruz in 2020, hundreds of rentable electric bikes are expected to return to Santa Cruz and expand to UC Santa Cruz, Cabrillo College, Capitola and other Santa Cruz County areas through a subsidiary of Trek Bicycle Corp. called BCycle LLC.
Santa Cruz in June is expected to receive bikes and have docking stations installed at the same locations that JUMP bikes had, city and BCycle leaders said. Additional docks are expected at UC Santa Cruz in June, said Santa Cruz Transportation Planner Claire Gallogly.
